College Students Discuss the Requirements of Conception of an Invention

I overheard two of the students talking about their inventions and how they are not patentable. I thought that they prototypes were good enough for a patent but I do not have the expertise in this area that they do. I heard one of them say that the conception of an invention must be patentable. The other student agreed and stated that he was not at that point with this prototype yet but would be soon.
