Marshall Family
By Jeannette Holland Austin
John Marshall, Chief Justice of the United States, was born 24 Sept 1755 in Germantown, Virginia and died 6 July 1835 in Philadelphia.
The eldest of 15 children, John Marshall was born in a log cabin on the Virginia frontier (today in Fauquier co., Va.) and spent his childhood and youth in primitive surroundings. His father rose to prominence in local and state politics. Through his mother he was related to the Lees and the Randolphs as well as to Thomas Jefferson, later his great antagonist. He was also related to Thomas Camp of Essex County, Virginia.
Marshall served as an officer in the American Revolution; he was admitted to the bar in 1780, he practiced law in the West and was elected (1782) a delegate to the Virginia assembly. He married and settled in Richmond, his home until his death.
He was a Federalist, Lawyer, Judge, Episcopalian, statesman and jurist who shaped American constitutional law and made the Supreme Court a center of power. Marshall served as Chief Justice of the United States serving 1801 until his death in 1835. He served in the US House of Representatives from 1799 to 1800; was Secretary of State under President John Adams from 1800-1801. Justice Marshall was the longest serving Chief Justice in the history of the Supreme Court and helped to shape the American legal system for over three decades
