Donelson from Virginia to Tennessee by Jeannette Holland Austin
John Donelson, born 1715, was the son of Catherine Davies and Patrick Donelson and emigrated with his parents from London to Pittsylvania County, Virginia where he was married. He served as a lieutenant-colonel in 1775 during the American Revolution. His life was filled with adventure, and in 1780 went to Fort Patrick Henry on the Holston River to the French Lick on the Cumberland, a place where Nashville now stands. He was a surveyor and was killed by Indians in 1785.

The Donelson coat of arms was registered in Edinburgh, Scotland in 1312. For more information on this family, see the Folder Collection at www.georgiapioneers.com
